Crypto4A is Quantum Safe

Many people mistakenly believe that a FIPS 140 validation means an HSM is quantum-safe. In reality, not only does FIPS validation not address quantum-readiness, but the process can make designing a quantum-safe HSM particularly challenging.

3 Key Takeaways from NIST

Just today NIST released its long-awaited report on the results of their Round 3 process for selecting post-quantum algorithms for standardization. The chosen algorithms CRYSTALS – Kyber, CRYSTALS- Dilithium, FALCON and SPHINCS+ will now be standardized and will start showing up in our roots of trust, our applications, our devices, our networks, and so on. In addition, evaluation efforts will continue for BIKE, Classic McEliece, HQC, and SIKE as they progress into a 4th round of evaluation to determine which, if any, will be added to the list of algorithms that NIST will be standardizing.

Trust and Verify

We have been stressing the fact that we all need to consider the time, effort and risk involved in a change of cryptographic families on the whole of our IT and OT stacks. And we must note that cryptography is the foundation for digital trust when it comes to these IT and OT stacks; without digital trust, these stacks cannot and should not store or process critical business data. So, we need to trust and verify. This change is especially needed to prepare for the onset of quantum processing.
